Appearence:
Maverick may not be the tallest man in the room ( though nobody could say he's short, really ), he does cut a striking figure that still demands respect. He stand at five eleven, however he does stoop often so at times, he can appear to be smaller. Due to his back injury, the man can no longer walk without an irregular gait to his swagger that could become even more pronounced depending on the ache in his joints ( though, he can still ride a horse well enough but at shorter intervals ).Personality:
Physically, from years of training, Maverick is no small man at all. His muscles aren't overly huge, but sinewy and compact, noticeable when he's shirtless. He is in-shape and possesses a six-pack, though is slim with narrow hips. His arms and legs, while long, are proportional to his torso. Maverick is a bit hairy, namely on his arms and legs, with some blonde hairs on his chest as well.
He isn't one to rate his physical attractiveness, though--through opinion--he isn't exactly an ugly man. Maverick has strong facial features and a head of dark blonde curls. With a square jaw, plush lips, and a medium-sized nose, he has some classical appeal to himself. Maverick has a set of sky-blue eyes, arguably his most noticeable and striking feature. He has been told they look wise beyond his years though, which he's not certain is a good thing at all.
This man is, and will always be, a cowboy--and he is labeled as such through his clothing and country mannerisms. Maverick prefers lose-fitting button-down flannel t-shirts and tight jeans with that big belt on anyways. He stomps around in nice boots and is almost never without a stetson, however he will respect customs and remove the hat indoors. While he tries to maintain a semblance of cleanliness throughout the day--especially while he's teaching--by the time he turns in, he's usually dusty.
Maverick is a rather simple man. This by no means dubs him an idiot, though he probably wouldn't pass any math exam with outstanding marks or anything. He's got a lot of common sense to him; he's seen a lot. Sometimes people don't take him seriously on account of his country ways and strange accent, but he just has a different way of living is all.History:
He is a very dedicated, hard-worker of a man. Maverick will labor from sun-up to sun-down without ever thinking of wanting to complain about it. He knows there are far worse things than making a living for yourself. And sometimes, it's the only way he can get some sleep or peace and quiet--he'll literally drive himself till the brink of exhaustion. He will never leave anything unfinished and if he does, something is wrong.
Unfortunately, from his war experience, he is not without some cracked surface. Maverick suffers from insomnia and night terrors, hence why he'd prefer to work his bones try to get a little shut-eye. His dreams almost always are of his war days, or of his deceased wife. Maverick happens to be a rather private sort, so this isn't something that people would know about him. The most they'd know of is that he might come to work with bags under his eyes and quieter than normal. He never speaks of either experience and may grow angsty if questioned.
Normally though, Maverick is extremely polite and well-mannered. He treats women especially nice, as he's grown up knowing their importance. His father never raised him to disrespect a lady. He will always address them as 'miss, ms, or mrs'. He opens doors, he takes them dancing, he wines and dines them. This extra care and attention may sometimes give them the wrong idea, however. His behavior can be mistaken for interest, which may not always be the case and often times, is not.
He does his best to avoid confrontations--that's not what he's here to do, and feels it's a waste of time and energy. Maverick believes no one can really change, but you have to learn to accept them as they are. Otherwise, what's the point? While he doesn't appear to possess a temper or anger of any kind, it's there and can come into existence if the right buttons are pushed. Recommended action: don't push them. He's trained to kill and with his sometimes unstable emotions, it does make for a volatile combination.
Maverick knows how to keep himself calm though. He's got things to think about and usually a deep breath will do the trick. He's got a son to consider as well, which is the best way to make him see right through the anger. Though his son is nearly five now, he is just recently a new, single father. Maverick doesn't feel he's qualified to raise a child by himself and feels he's very inefficient at it. However, he does what he can to provide Logan a good home.
First off, Maverick James Humphrey was born on a ranch in Helena Butte, Montana. His family was a good one; well-known in the small town for their hard-work and skills. His parents especially were respected for having high-standing morals everyone could appreciate. Alongside his brothers, Maverick was brought up with a strong sense of self-respect, and appreciation of others. It was a house full of young men, which could at times frustrate his mother, though they weren't ever that bad to handle.Sample Rp:
Maverick's best memories go back a long time. He remembers growing up around his father and the hired help the most, learning from their examples. They often sat around on the porch, chewing and spitting tobacco as they remarked of their harebrained wives, even though it was clear not a one of them truly felt that way. It intrigued the boy so much, he once stole a bit of tobacco for himself to try, got sick for an entire week from it, and never took a sample of it since. These men were the reason Maverick grew up with such a strong respect of women. They taught him that no matter how crazy, or talkative, or frustratingly they can be, that they were still the ones he'd love at the end of the day. He needed to know that, and show them the proper reverence they deserved. His father especially believed a woman ought to have one special person, a notion that Maverick adopted for himself.
The boy did chores and his school work just as everyone else. Maverick had a lot of responsibilities thrust upon him, and for his good behavior, often allowed to play with the horses. He learned to ride at a very early age and proved quite adept at the past-time. So much so, he entered a few county fairs and came away with some prizes for his hold of a horse. His favorite thing to do was roping cattle, as it gave him the opportunity to ride around the countryside for hours at a time.
As a teenager, a new family moved into town not too far from his pa's ranch. They had a girl, Renee la Barre, just his age who started the same school. As outsiders, it was only natural for the townsfolk to be suspicious and blacklist them. The la Barre's were cityfolk, they didn't work hard like the rest of them. People warned Maverick right and left to stay away from that girl but she was a pretty little girl and his hormones were raging. He just couldn't listen this one time. Renee introduced him into a whole new world of drugs and alcohol. She was like a rush to him, and Maverick was hooked. She was all he ever thought of to the point where his chores and homework were ignored.
His parents couldn't do much to stop his infatuation. If rebuked and forbidden to stay away from her, Maverick would simply disappear for a few days to freak them out. He spent the time hiding in Renee's room. She was his first love in every way and he truly believed it would last, despite how dysfunctional they were behaving. The girl wanted to party more than pay attention to her responsibilities. Skipping class, drinking a few beers, and skinny-dipping in the lake were her favorite activities. Like a lovesick puppy, Maverick would follow.
Even with this, he managed to graduate with mediocre grades. At one point, things got so serious he thought of marriage. Maverick went so far as to buy her a ring with what little money he had saved. The day before he'd planned to propose however, Renee split town entirely. She never told him where she was going, or why she was leaving. She'd simply... left. Alone now, Maverick spiraled into depression. His mind went through a number of self-conflicting thoughts that tore his self-esteem down. He turned to booze to escape from it. His brothers would sometimes find him passed out in a ditch somewhere and have to drag his ass home.
This went on for months until finally, his family pulled an intervention. An ultimatum was issued: either he sober up and get right again, or he could leave. Maverick didn't want to be around these people and seeing how much he'd depressed them as well, so he instead enlisted into the military. It wasn't as easy as he'd assumed it would be. The training was tough, and his withdrawals were worse. But the army helped him through it all, rebuilt him back up and made him stronger. Before he knew it, Maverick was a favorite and soaring through the ranks. He got to Lieutenant before his unit was shipped overseas to aid in manpower. This didn't end well for the young man. The night before they planned to raid an enemy camp, they were ambushed and Maverick got a knife in the back.
He spent several months in therapy, learning how to walk again though would never be without a handicap. It could have been worse. Once fully recovered, Maverick was dispatched and sent back home to another shocking--but pleasant--surprise. Renee was back, and had been for several months. On her arm, she toted a little two year old baby boy the splitting image of Maverick himself. His family had opened their arms to her for the baby's sake; he was suddenly a father. He learned Renee's uprooting was from her pregnancy; she'd been scared to face it. It took a long time for him to forgive her, but he did.
Good times were had. The small family had finally reunited--he was a good father, and eventually got his wish, marrying Renee and making her a Humphrey. He was happy again, even after the things he'd gone through and seen from war. It seemed that the man wasn't fated for happy times forever, though. Just a year after their marriage, Renee was thrown from a horse. Maverick had been unable to get her aid quick enough to save her life--something he's never forgiven himself for.
With so many bad memories, Maverick made the decision to uproot himself and Logan. His parents helped him to establish footing in California, giving him financial backing to open his own small ranch. He wasn't able to support the two of them just on that, though. Good with his hands and with enough schooling to impress the board, he was given a position at the school teaching woodshop. Now, Maverick's been here only a few months and is still trying to adjust. He's still in mourning, but pushing on. And he's got a son to worry about.
