Though many believe that personality defines a person, it is a common misconception. When a pretty girl walks down the street, the person who has laid eyes on the pretty girl remembers one thing: she was pretty. Of course a stunning personality or a miserable personality can make a person look attractive or unattractive. Yet when you rewind everything, the first focus is always the look.Personality:
Landon knows that an appearance defines you. In an instant, an eighteen year old girl can look twenty one with a little make-up and high heels. For boys, it is quite the challenge. Instead, you must appear to be older with actions. One of the main tasks of Landon's job, as he calls it, is to appear older. He has mastered the changing of appearances without actually bothering to change his appearance. In one moment, he can appear to be a simple nineteen year old boy, but in the next, be a much more mature twenty two year old with a knack for gambling and an unrelenting goal to make it to the top.
Because of his fleeting appearance, it is quite hard to put Landon's appearance into words. It is possible, however, to describe the features which make up his appearance. They are simply features, but not the actions that he puts behind him. The "appearance" that he makes for himself is what is almost impossible to nail down.
To put it simply, Landon looks like the average guy. There is nothing extraordinary or unextrodinary about him. He has flaws just like any other person. He is not outlandishly gorgeous of terribly ugly. He is just simply average.
His hair is usually slicked back with the slightest bit of gel. The word "usually" is used loosely here, considering it is almost never found not smoothed back. The only times that his hair is not quickly done like that are while it is dripping wet in the shower or ruffled from tossing and turning in bed at night. If you do the math, that leaves little time for his hair to look a mess. He doesn't have great pride in his hair or anything like that. He just likes to look put together. According to Landon, being put together starts at the top of one's hair and ends at the tip of one's toes.
His forehead is the usual length of foreheads and his ears are a normal size. His one eye is noticeably larger than the other, but when you look into them, that isn't what you're paying attention to. His eyes don't tell a story. All of that "the eyes are the windows of the soul" stuff is complete and utter bullshit to him. His eyes don't show shit. They are always one shade and always completely blank. His muscle reflexes are what people can read. But don't be fooled by squinting or blinking. Landon has full control over his muscles and uses them to his advantage. When he wants to appear happy, he doesn't instinctively appear happy. Instead, he will make himself appear happy. You see only what Landon wants you to see. That, right there, is the ultimate control over ones self. However, that leaves little room for losing control, which is something he has lost in the process.
Not only are his muscles near his eyes trained to do what he wants them to do, but so are the muscles of the rest of his face. His lips remain always closed in a relaxed manner. When he wants to smile, he smiles. When he wants to purse his lips, he does so. Just like his ears and his forehead, every other aspect of his face is pretty much the normal. Nothing is exciting. All the features come together to make him look "handsome", but so do many other guys of the world. Sure, his "looks" help him attain women, but that is all they really mean to him. They are just another strategy in his planned and plotted life.
His face and neck are longer than most, but everybody has something that makes them different. There isn't anything particularly fancy or astonishing underneath his shirt. He's not chunky, but he's not built to kill either. He doesn't have excessively visible abdominal muscles, though his stomach is still very strong. His arms do not reveal much muscle either, though there is still some muscle revealed. It's just enough muscle to make him somewhat intimidating yet somewhat a mystery about his actual strength.
His hips form two perfectly shaped slopes downward that women seem to find undeniably attractive. He doesn't understand why, exactly, but he isn't going to fight it. If anything, he believes what they really find attractive is the way he presents himself.
Landon's usual attire looks like something straight out of a GQ magazine. He likes to wear white button up shirts and thin black or navy blue ties. He doesn't obnoxiously have undone buttons or choke himself with his tie. His look is very loose and comfortable, which is almost defying laws considering the outfit would seem uncomfortable if anyone else were to wear it. His tie is usually matched perfectly with either a blazer or a vest. Lately, he has found himself very much into leather jackets too. The colors of his shirts or his ties or his blazers change, but the look always seems to stay the same: classic. That is what he likes. His views on clothing seem to mimic the views that Frank Sinatra had. The more put together he looks, the more women seem to stare. It's just a fact of nature that many men can never seem to fully understand.
He is simply speaking, an average guy with some very precise and practiced skills. With a different walk or the change of a tie, he can change the whole appearance of himself in an instance. It is all about how he perceives himself and how he expects the rest of the world to perceive him. Whatever he wants is what he gets.
It's hard to put Landon into words. Adjectives do a terrible job at describing him. Why? Because his personality is just as fleeting as his appearance. But behind all the bluffs there is a solid personality behind his hard exterior. Whether you ever get to see his personality is a different story. The personality that most people know is simply just another act.History:
WHAT EVERYONE SEES
Landon's personality is generally defined by his visible actions. Even at a young age Landon had always been a mystery. He was stealthy and sneaky, getting away with the most mischievous acts with skillful wording and conniving actions. His teachers often described him as the friendly quiet angel of the class. Little did they know how manipulated they were becoming, falling right into his innocent trap. His "friends" would often take the fall for him throughout grade school leaving his record clean. His discipline record is still spotless. He has everyone wrapped around his finger: friends, family, teachers, enemies, females. Everybody. Except for one person, though he is pretty sure she's just as infatuated with his cunning exterior personality. Occasionally throughout the years, teachers and friends would call him out on his ways. They would accuse him of being fake. Yet every time they would come up short of finding any evidence. The secrets he has he keeps very well. He has serial killer like traits without the insanity or obsession with murder. Details; they are what he is obsessed with. Which is one of the reasons why he is one of the best and most successful underground poker players.
He is guarded, above all else. From the outside he is just an appearance. He was never very talkative but he didn't fit as an outcast. He's friendly, but nowhere close to being a social butterfly. Those around him deemed him a classic, not because of who he associated with, but because he dressed fairly nice and appeared to come from a great deal of money. They did not deem him a classic because of his manipulation because honestly, they had no idea. He hardly associates with other cliques which pleases the classics. He doesn't do this because of the status, but because he has come to find that he can get more out of the higher cliques, though if a lower clique member had something to offer him he would definitely take them up on it. He's even been embracing the asshole nature of the classics lately, acting more like his comrades but only as a facade. He secretly believes he's better than everybody in any of those cliques anyway.
The way Landon acts intentionally at school is different then how he acts while at his underground kingdom. Every single move made or word spoken by Landon is done intentionally. He watches his actions all the time, never giving way to any involuntary movements. He has full control over his body. Something you should know about Landon: he's a genius. He uses more of the brain than the average person and he uses it for his own purposes. School is a breeze for him but generally boring. Nothing beats the high and the rush that gambling brings to him.
When he's in the zone every action has a purpose. While most gamblers wear sunglasses to hide their expressions, he doesn't need them. Every blink is audible to Landon. His actions are focused on the psych of other people. Every move is meant to be a trick. His personality while in this underground arena reflects that. He is usually quiet, only speaking after thinking in depth about what he will say. He appears confident in most circumstances however, giving the illusion of a regular old gambler but with more unique processes. And these processes bring in the bacon.
WHAT YOU'LL NEVER SEE
On the inside, behind the intentional actions and behind the clothing and behind the hair styles is an extremely fearful teenage boy. He keeps his anxiety in check pretty well, pushing it to the back of his mind with all the rest of his actual personality that he refuses to let people see. What he fears the most is being caught. This does not mean he's scared somebody will bust him one day for underage gambling or call him out for manipulation. No. He is scared that one day somebody will come into his life and break down the walls he has built for so many years. He knows they are breakable, as much as he attempts to convince himself they aren't. It just takes the right weapon. What scares him the most is that he's almost positive he knows somebody can do it. And he knows exactly who it is.
Landon's got a pretty raw sense of humor that he covers up as well. He likes to bring it into play when he's flirting with women. He cracks jokes and uses heavy sarcasm with a hint of sweetness to reel them in. He occasionally uses sarcasm while gambling as well. On a rare occasion he can be heard snickering at a joke or a conversation he was eavesdropping on. He finds humor in situations, but mostly he just finds logic.
Landon knows a lot about everything generally. He's got straight A's in most of his classes without even trying. Occasionally he'll get a C not because he doesn't know the information but because he is simply too smart to even bother. He can be cocky at times with his knowledge but only purposefully. Most of the time he is very humble and actually even offers to tutor those struggling in a subject. He doesn't flaunt his intelligence around unless the person is being a dick and the teachers hold back their praise due to Landon not wanting any of it. He's considered dropping out of school more times than he can count. It is a waste of his time and he finds it much easier to make money by doing something thrilling rather than wasting more time at college learning things he already knows. But his parents encouraged him to stay in school and therefore, he plans to graduate only to please them and then continue on his merry way.
Underneath, in the way way way back, is a sweet genuine guy. He's had crushes before but has never acted on the majority of them. The girls he is seen with are usually manipulated into bed with him, so when he has legitimate crushes he tends to toss them away. He refuses to manipulate somebody that he truly likes which is why he doesn't have many friends. He finds it extremely hard to balance out both his personalities and fears bringing somebody into his life that is important will ruin the infrastructure he's built. Manipulation trumps friendship for Landon and will continue to for now. His walls are up. The side effects of them breaking down may be fatal to Landon and everybody around him, especially the person who manages to force them apart.
To even begin to understand Landon is important to first understand his parents.Sample Rp:
Brayden Spalding Jr, father of Landon, was raised by his father Brayden Spalding Sr. His sister Taylor and himself lived a fairly difficult life. At a young age their mother Madeline left them and disappeared from their lives. Only recently did Brayden hear news that his mother passed away a few years after. The reasons for his mother leaving at still unknown, yet Brayden and Taylor spent most of their lives blaming their father who turned to gambling and alcohol as comfort in her absence. Taylor left home after graduating high school at eighteen. She moved into a house with friends and got an education by working and receiving financial aid. She now is married with two children. Brayden on the other hand was trapped at home. Only fifteen at the time, he clung onto anything stable. He found this stability in his relationship with his high school girlfriend Amelia Barvick.
Amelia was an only child. Growing up, her family was generally average. There was nothing really special about them. Both her parents had respectable jobs and made a fair amount of money. They were just a normal happy middle class family. But this wasn't the case at all. Her parents swept many secrets under the rug, hiding information from Amy. Her junior year of high school was when she first began to uncover secrets. Manipulation and corruption were at the center of their family and the family history. They were involved in illegal activities that Amy was appalled to discover. She immediately began to despise her parents which only made her and Brayden's relationship stronger.
They both attended the same college while living with their parents. Brayden majored in Business while Amy majored in Psychology. During their junior year they bought an apartment together as they struggled to work and go to school simultaneously. After graduation Amy and Brayden had a small simple wedding with only a few close relatives and friends. They immediately found jobs and moved into a middle class home. Brayden spent his time working his way up that ladder at his company until he eventually decided to branch out and start his own business. His endeavor paid off. Soon enough they moved from middle to high class. They moved into a bigger home and Amelia quit her job to become a stay at home mother.
On July 2nd, Landon Brayden Spalding was born. Brayden and Amy were so pleased to have a little boy. For the first four years of his life Amy stayed at home to raise him. As much as she loved Landon, she found it extremely difficult to conform to the stay at home mother life. She got bored easily, especially since Landon was such a calm toddler. He entertained himself easily despite having his mother as a playmate. His parents lacked a rule system because they simply didn't need one. He never got cranky and would simply nap when he got mad.
About a month before his fifth birthday, Landon's grandfather had begun to struggle financially. Although Brayden and his father never quite got along, Brayden still loved his father and allowed him to live with them as long as he stopped drinking and gambling. After seeing where both of the addictions had led him, he agreed to quit and moved in. He was great with Landon, too. After a year of living with them Amy had decided to go back to work and have Brayden Sr. watch over little Landon when he would come home from school. They spent countless hours together and from a young age Landon was interested in the card games his grandfather taught him. Although Landon's father was skeptical, Amy saw no problem with the games. They taught Landon how to count, divide, and handle money. He was no genius, but first and second grade math came easily to him.
Landon didn't struggle make friends during grade school. The more he played these card games with his grandfather the sneakier he got. The kids at school was fascinated by his ability to get away with even the biggest of schemes. They flocked to him but Landon refused to be any kind of leader for them. That was not his purpose. He simply just enjoyed the thrill of the possibility of being caught despite the fact that not even the teachers could figure out who planned the plots.
Toward seventh and eighth grade, as his plots became more serious and in depth, he would use other students at scapegoats. Because of Landon's flawless record none of the teachers believed he would ever do half of the conniving things he pursued. He was overlooked and the generally bad kids took the blame. It wasn't until tenth grade that a teacher had finally called him out, but this was after a long ninth grade year.
The summer before Landon entered high school is grandfather had passed away. Landon and his grandfather were extremely close. Honestly, his grandfather was the only one he ever really talked to. Sure, he talked to his parents, but they could never quite figure him out. If something was wrong they went and asked Brayden Sr. They had this bond that only two gamblers could have. It took years of practice but toward the end of his life Landon was starting to call out his grandfather's bluffs. He knows secrets about his grandmother that he promised his grandfather he wouldn't speak of. His grandfather took some things to the grave, but by spending time with him Landon had figured a lot of his grandfather out. Landon has yet to encounter a gambler who has a better bluffing ability then his grandfather did.
Landon went into seclusion when his grandfather died. He lost the only person he felt he could relate to. His parents didn't know how to comfort him except to give him space. They loved Landon but even when he was born knew that they would never quite understand their son. He was different but in a mysterious sort of way. It didn't mean they loved their son any less. Landon simply stopped speaking in long sentences and would only give short answers. He was hurting inside and harboring things, but during the summer found a way to push it all to the back. He glazed over and let another personality own him completely. His grandfather was gone, but his legacy was not. Landon knew he had to carry on with what his grandfather left behind.
During his first years of high school Landon fit in with the classics right away, mostly because of his looks. He didn't argue but simply meshed, because with the classics came girls, drinking, and popularity. He still remained the "good boy" in school, letting others take the fall for extravagant schemes. He even planned a senior prank his sophomore and let others take the fall while he took the credit.
It wasn't until tenth grade when a teacher had finally called him out. Her name was Mrs. Jensen. She had seen the mischief in his eyes and knew he was up to something. She knew that half of the things that went on at school were by his doing, but like the rest couldn't find a speck of evidence. Landon liked the fact that she could see somewhat through him, but at the same time he didn't. He saw her as someone he could confide in, however, and she became somewhat of a mentor to him. It turned out her husband was somewhat of a gambler on the side. Upon meeting him for the first time Landon first found out about some underground gambling. They spoke about it briefly before Landon took it into his own hands to find out more. Mrs. Jensen moved to another city after tenth grade and they had lost touch, but for his sophomore year it was good to have somebody to tell his worries to and to admit he was actually hurting inside.
By the summer before junior year, Landon had emerged himself into the underground gambling scene. He spent the end of his sophomore year practicing tactics and techniques after he would breeze through his homework. He knew he could do this and he also knew he could do it better than his grandfather. So he took on an alias and took to the underground.
He struggled at first as he made his way. But even the most experienced saw a light in him. He was intelligent and knew how to play the games well. He began to instantly impress others with his talents. Nothing went unnoticed. He soon made a name for himself down there, beating some of the most experienced and oldest gamblers. Many attempted to take him under their wing but he refused. He would be his own person and they respected that. Of course many hated him too, but simply because of his skills. He was respectable and none of them could argue that.
His parents were oblivious. After years and years of trying to figure their son out they had given up. His father didn't approve of the things he knew were going on, but he couldn't quite stop them without proof. Landon would deny everything because he knew his father had no base to go on. Despite the fact that him and his father occasionally argued, they had become tighter. He saw his grandfather's pain over losing his son and Landon didn't want to cause that pain to his father. Yet at the same time he knew what he wanted. He had different ambitions then his father did and he was going to pursue them.
By his senior year he had a bank account stocked with massive amounts of money that he had won. He would have dropped out of high school but has decided to instead continue his secretive gambling life and drop out of college at the legal gambling age to purse his dreams of becoming a professional gambler.
