What's a good reporter without her sources? Nothing, that's what. Shelby is 16, going into her Sophomore year and just back from her trip abroad after being a winner of the CNN Young Journalist contest. She's ready to jump straight back into school and life now, and of course, that entails her new position as editor of the school newspaper and the usual work of being a gossip.
Every good editor needs writers to boss around and sources to gather information from. And every good gossip needs friends, enemies and their own personal sources. Then, potentially, every girl needs a love interest, someone who is or may become boyfriend material.

Friends... Or rather "friends". There are plenty of reasons to want to be around Shel. She's got the best gossip, she can get whatever your pet project is printed on the front page of the school newspaper and she's actually kind of nice under all of it. As long as someone doesn't try to just use her and still has good information, she's willing to talk to most people. Of course, she won't be caught dead around outcasts and the lower rung groups in public. Aside from her work, she could really use two or so friends that could help her really relax and get away from everything. She's not a drug user or smoker, so those wouldn't work too well, but she likes people who can pull her away from her work and make her go to the beach or shopping.
Enemies... Just like there are many reasons to like her, there are just as many reasons to hate Shelby. Her falling out with the drama club means few of them like her, especially after she wrote an editorial calling to separate the choir from the drama club. If you hate gossip, you've got an issue with her, and there are a fair amount who think she's really just a wannabe, or are jealous of her writing abilities.
Lovers... She's a busy, busy girl and rarely has time to dally over boys, but she does keep an eye out for the right companion, someone with the same work ethic and love of the written word as she. If a guy pops up, she's apt to be cautious, and one-night-stands are normally out of the question - what would the other gossips say?! However, if someone is able to be subtle enough, she might go for them.

Shelby (AKA Shel, Shelb, Shelbs) loves to sing but had a falling out with some of the drama geeks. Though she's mostly very outgoing and pretty funny, she can be introverted when she's tired of talking, and does occasionally snap at those who interrupt her work. She's the type to always have sources of every rung on her speed dial, from the Royal Court to the lowly outcasts, though she won't visibly associate with the latter. She gets along well with hippies because her parents were (and often still are) old-school peace and love Jesus Freaks. She's not the type to hesitate on revenge if it's deserved and hates to be used. Above all, she's hardworking and stubborn - when her mind is set on something, it'll take heaven and hell to change it, and she strives above and beyond the call of duty to get what she wants. If you want something printed or known, she's the one to talk to and befriend.
If I can gather enough potential writers, I've been told that we'll have an area set up for the school newspaper. From there I'll establish writing guidelines and accept story submissions from anyone around school, though "beat reporters" - people who cover specific subjects regularly - will be greatly appreciated. Of course, if Shelby doesn't like someone, their story might not get in, or might appear with a few "changes"... Though the school paper might try to appear unbiased and full of hard news, it's run by a gossip, so don't think that the drama won't find a way to make an appearance through snide wording and Op-ed columns.
