Character Name:
Ava Maree (MAH-ri) Torres
Nickname(s):
Ava, Mari, Tia
Gender:
Female
Age:
19
Sexuality:
Homosexual for the most part.
Things get messy when booze is involved.
Weight:
~110lbs (she's anti-scale)
Height:
She likes to think she's 5'4"
Appearence:
To sum Ava up in one line is simple: dynamite in a small package. Despite being a tiny thing, she is in no way fragile looking. Her body is lean, tight and toned and she's extremely meticulous about it, having suffered from an eating disorder in her youth. Her body is her everything and she treats it like a temple.
Her face is probably her least favourite thing about herself. She thinks it's too round and that she looks extremely youthful - she hates it. Her eyes are large and round and the colour of mahogany and she absolutely loathes how big they are, often comparing them to a cows. However, if there's one thing about her face she loves, it's her lips. Wide and full, she often uses her plump pout to her advantage.
Born with fairly non-descript brown hair, Ava has done much with it. From dying it blonde to black to auburn and nearly every colour in between, she finds it as an expressive outlet. The hue often reflects her mood or the seasons or simply her need for something different. It's not rare that she'll dye it at random after a night on the piss or a big row with someone like her mother. As of now, however, it's dark - nearly black and falls in wavey layers to just below her shoulder blades. She's debating putting streaks in it but time will tell.
Being that she's of hispanic and mexica decent, she's very tan and has certain.. assets. And, although she naturally has a healthy tint to her skin, she's a regular at the beach. Tan skin looks skinnier than pale skin, after all. Oh yeah, and as small and tight as she is, she does possess serious curves and a bum, to boot.
As far as clothing goes, Ava is very casual. There's nothing that really defines her style.. she just puts on things that she likes and that match and goes. She's currently living on a bit of a budget so the sales racks are her best friend.
Ava also loves piercings. Having gotten her freedom, she went a bit crazy and now has about sixteen. Her right ear has six holes and her left has five: four in each lobe plus a rook and tragus and a helix respectively. She then went on to get her right nostril, nipples, tongue, belly button, and triangle done over the course of two years. This isn't to say she wears most of these anymore. It was a moment.
Personality:
Ava is very... mercurial.
Her past and strict conservative upbringing has very much shaped who she is today. She's stubborn, head strong, independent, and firey and don't think she's afraid to show it.
There was a time when Ava was meek, shy, and insecure. She had no sense of self, no confidence. She was raised to cook, clean, and keep house and, eventually, she felt oppressed. Oppressed by her parents' plans for her future and by her church, the Torres family being ultra-Catholic.
Eventually, Ava found her voice. Through trials and tribulations, she finally had enough. Thus, she gained confidence and developed her sense of self. In a way, she's now very feminist. She's extremely independent and isn't the sort to take hand outs. She self-sufficient and proud. Maybe a little too proud. There is a hint of arrogance to her. And bitterness.
The thing with Ava is you mess with her and she will retaliate. She has a harsh tongue and, if she feels attacked, she will defend herself. She can be quite abrasive but that usually only comes out when her tough exterior is in jeapordy.
Most of the time, however, Ava is very hot and cold. It's hard to know where you stand with her and she isn't the easiest person to read. It takes a bit to crack her open; once you do, you'll see that a lot of her attitude is due to her vulnerability and her fear of being alone and failing.
Another thing about Ava is that she's become quite cunning and wiley due to her travels and having to avoid being taken advantage of. It's more of a defensive mechanism but she will use it to her advantage if she wants something.
History:
Ava Torres was born in Detroit, Michigan to a fairly wealthy family. Her parents, Francisco and Magdalena, had inherited a law firm from a late family member early on in their marriage, resulting in Magdalena quitting her job as a bank teller to help with the books while Frankie continued to work as a litigator while also taking on the workload of managing the firm. With time, the firm expanded and so did the Torres family, Ava being born on a sunny Saturday in late April. However, with the burden of the firm, Ava was never blessed with any siblings.
From early on, Ava's life revolved around family and church. And she was fine with that. In the early days, there was no need for Ava to dispute this; her life was simple and spending any extra time with her parents was of utmost importance since both remained busy managing the firm. She never held anything against her parents' busy schedule and, instead, focused on the time she had with them.
In those days, despite her mother's best efforts, Ava was very much a tomboy at heart. Despite being dressed in frilly, delicate frocks, she still ran amuck with the boys on her street. She might not have been the most outgoing or charismatic girl, but she had grown to be rather creative due to spending a great deal of time on her own. Her mother saw this and enrolled her in the best tap, jazz, and dance classes available. And, despite having the option of developing friendships with the girls in her classes, she still found herself relying on her childhood friends to give her the attention she wasn't getting at home as well as the companionship she craved.
Her bond with her childhood playmates was broken as time passed and it affected her deeply. She had become so reliant on the friendship she had with them that she found herself lost and insecure. Middle school began and looks became more important. Sadly for Ava, she fell short in that department. Call it an awkward phase, but Ava simply couldn't transition from child to pre-teen as well as the other girls did. Stuck in glasses and braces instead of makeup and the latest fashions, her insecurities reached epic proportions. Cliques were the bane of her existence and, as her old friends climbed the ladder of popularity with ease, she plummeted to the bottom of the ranks.
Remaining an unknown until grade nine was hard for Ava. She struggled with her shortcomings, taking every little jibe and tease to heart. She worried excessively about her weight and her skin. The image she saw in the mirror was never good enough. Feeling like she was floundering, she did what she had to in order to gain some semblance of control of her life: she developed bulimia. Although her parents were regularly busy, she knew there was no way she could get around not eating – what with her nanny and her mother's eagle eyes. Thus, making herself throw up was the best option.
Eventually, she got contact lenses and the braces came off. Her skin began to clear up and, after studying fashion magazines like they were the bible, she indulged in the best make up and began to stay on top of fashion trends. Needless to say, Ava seemingly changed overnight.
High school was a much better time for Ava. She – slowly – began to feel more comfortable in her skin and she willingly began to accept the attention that was regularly being given to her by her male classmates. With her transformation, popularity arrived on her doorstep and she didn't hesitate to snatch it up. She joined the cheer squad and dance team and found temporary solace in it all.
It took her some time to realize that she needed to shake off the superficiality that she had wrapped herself in. During this 'enlightening' period, her love life took a few hard hits. Now, if there was one thing that Magdalena had instilled in Ava – and that had actually stuck – was that she was a lady and that ladies had tact and self-preservation. Needless to say, Ava was never even remotely promiscuous. In fact, she was the opposite. She was the sort've girl you couldn't touch. It was how she remained in control.
It was because of her prude ways that she found herself heartbroken on various occasions. The first happened well before high school with a childhood crush and the second was her boyfriend and date to her Quinceañera. When he decided not to show up and, later, revealed he had been cheating on her during the duration of their relationship, Ava was crushed. It took one more similar episode to make her decide that she had had enough and that happened at her junior prom. Her date, being drunk, felt it wise to force himself on her. She, however, did not share his sentiments. Appalled, shaken, and absolutely mortified by the ordeal - which she escaped with her purity intact - she came to the conclusion that men only knew how to think with their dick.. and she wanted nothing of it.
Overcoming that final ordeal gave Ava confidence she never had before - and a boatload of bitterness. The bubbly, fake, and occasionally shy Ava gave way to an Ava who very much acted like she had a chip on her shoulder. Ava had always found beauty in other women, she just never expressed it. She had grown up being told that only and man and a woman should be together and that any deviation from this norm was a mortal sin. It didn't matter whether she agreed or not, there was no getting around it when it came to the church and her parents. Needless to say, this didn't help her demeanour any.
It was during this time that Ava developed her sense of cunning. Having to keep her relationship with another girl under wraps took a great deal of effort, and Ava actually felt liberated because of it; so much so that she eventually outed herself to her parents a week before graduation. And, yes, they flipped. A massive row ensued that resulted in her practically severing ties with her parents. Sure, she had a made life ahead of her with the firm but, with her new view on her sexuality, Ava developed a strong sense of independence. She didn't want a handout. She wanted to make her own life.
In the end, Ava struck out with her best friend and, at that time, girlfriend. The two took Ava's land cruiser and took to the road, travelling first to the east coast. They experienced New York and Boston before heading south to escape the winter. Spending the next six or so months in Florida, the girls found themselves getting low on cash. Having only had what they had saved from their allowances and graduation money, they quickly realized they had to start working if they wanted to keep doing what they were doing.
Bar work was easy to come by and their looks helped greatly when it came to tips. In time, they had enough money to move on but, after a break down outside Austin, Texas, the two found their dream fading fast. It turned out that Kelly, Ava's friend, felt the need to return home, blaming homesickness and her need to further her life. Parting ways, Ava – by way of bus and her hitchhiker's thumb – made her way to Las Vegas.
Ava, for the first time in ages, found herself at home. The nightlife and constant partying was something she found very much to her liking and she took to it like a duck to water. She was able to become a wild child and it didn't take long before she found herself working in skin bars.
She remained in Las Vegas for over six months before finally deciding to move on. Her next stop was California, making her way to Central. Setting herself up with a place and a dog for company, it didn't take long for Ava to run out of money. Now a days, she lives off the paychecks (and tips) she gets from working nights at All Nighter, content with living life to the fullest.
